Introduction

Marriage is one of the most important events in one’s life and a sacred ritual in Indian families. Conventionally, the parents look for good matches for their eligible son or daughter. Their choices are essentially based on racial preferences, caste, sub-caste, region, language, physical features, religion, family background, dietary habits, and many more. Earlier the relatives, family, friends, neighbours, village puhrohits, and people of the same race use to find suitable matches for boys and girls. However, due to rapid urbanization, and the advancement of technology these matchmaking agents are found to be ineffective. With the emergence of Internet, the matrimonial sites started to flourish. Matrimonial sites register users, after which they are able to upload their profile onto a searchable database maintained by the website. The users looking for suitable matches search the database with customised features that typically include nationality, age, gender, availability of photograph and often religion, geographic location and caste, etc. TechZyena Solutions, Online matrimony is a billion dollar industry in India. The oldest and the highest popular site ‘shaadi.com’ has been there for last 17 years.

Suggestions

  1. There should be an information gateway indexing matrimonial information/sites so that all the matrimonial sites could be located, searched, monitored, and ranked from a single gateway.
  2. There should be uniformity in the information, databases, user interface, etc.
  3. There must be a certification agency which will certify the launching of matrimonial sites and periodic auditing of such sites as regards their authenticity and value.
  4. User registration should be made only on the production of necessary documents with ID proof such as PAN Cards, Driving Licence, Adhar Card, Institutional ID, etc. This will stop creation of fake matrimonial sites.
  5. The search interface should include the following search features: Best Search, Caste Search, City Search, Education Search, Profession Search, Mangalik Search, Keyword search, Religious and Social information, Life Style, Appearance, Family details, Astrology Search, Special cases search, etc.
  6. Every matrimonial site should have social media interfaces, such as Facebook and Twitter, it will take automatic status changes directly from those sites.
  7. It should also include some private information such as health status, family history etc. of the bride or the groom which can be given to the registered user on confidentality agreement of the party. Sometimes vital information is not available with the matrimonial sites and therefore it ends up with bad match.
  8. Periodic updates of the profile should be made compulsory for the users every year.
  9. The user registration for NRI bride or groom should be made under intimation to the embassy/employer so that any foul play is not possible.
  10. While registering profiles, the matrimonial sites should adhere to the social and cultural background of the communities.
