Communication Today, Jaipur, and BVICAM, New Delhi, jointly organised the 231st National Webinar on “Winning Minds, Winning Votes: Political Communication and Campaign Strategies.”

Introducing the theme Prof. Sanjeev Bhanawat, Editor of Communication Today, observed that political communication is not confined to winning elections; it also shapes public opinion, political participation and the quality of democratic discourse. He emphasised that technologically innovative and strategically successful campaigns must also be assessed in terms of their impact on informed citizenship and democratic values.

Keynote Speaker Head, Department of Media Sciences at Anna University, Chennai Prof. Arulchelvan traced the history of political campaigning and cited Julius Caesar as an early example of a ruler who strategically used communication to influence public opinion. He explained that the evolution of print to digital media has continuously transformed political campaigns. Contemporary political communication is no longer a one-way process but a complex, multidirectional network involving political parties, traditional media, social-media platforms, influencers, campaign workers and voters.

Highlighting the importance of voter psychology, Prof. Arulchelvan explained how emotions such as hope, fear, pride and belonging influence political choices. He discussed ethos, logos and pathos, along with framing, agenda-setting, repetition, slogans, symbols and leadership personality, as significant elements of persuasive political messaging.

Citing the campaigns of Barack Obama, Narendra Modi, Donald Trump and Tamil Nadu political leader Vijay, he illustrated the effective use of leader branding, digital mobilisation, direct communication and personalised messaging. Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign was noted for pioneering digital mobilisation, while Donald Trump’s use of social media demonstrated how political leaders could communicate directly with voters by bypassing traditional media gatekeepers.

Prof. Arulchelvan also explained that data analytics, predictive tools and micro-targeting enable campaign managers to classify voters and deliver personalised messages. User-generated content and networked platforms have transformed voters from passive receivers into active participants in political communication.

Priyanka Singh presented the e-certificate and e-memento to Prof. Arulchelvan and subsequently proposed the vote of thanks.
